UN Calls for Renewed Efforts to End Israeli Attacks on Lebanon

Beirut: UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk has urged the international community to intensify efforts toward a lasting cessation of hostilities in Lebanon, amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes despite a ceasefire agreement reached in November of last year.

According to Qatar News Agency, Turk revealed in remarks delivered Wednesday that 103 civilians have been killed over the past ten months, stating that they continue to witness the devastating impact of aerial and drone strikes in residential areas, including near UN peacekeeping forces in the south. He called for an independent investigation into the repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory.

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights previously confirmed that it had received no reports of fatalities resulting from rocket fire from Lebanon toward Israel since the ceasefire took effect. However, displacement remains a pressing issue, with over 80,000 people still displaced in Lebanon and 30,000 in northern parts of the occupied Palestinian territories.

The ceasefire agreement, which came into force on November 27, stipulated the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern border villages within 60 days. Although the Lebanese government extended the deadline to February 18, Israeli forces remain stationed at five positions and continue to violate the terms of the agreement.
