Doha: Turkish Minister of Transport Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced on Saturday that a tripartite meeting between Turkiye, Syria, and Jordan at the ministerial level is scheduled for this fall, aimed at organizing land transport operations more professionally. Speaking to reporters in the eastern province of Igdir, the minister explained that Turkiye had agreed with Syria to allow trucks to cross directly through border crossings without the need for unloading and reloading, noting that Syria will submit the necessary applications to obtain the required permits.
According to Qatar News Agency, Uraloglu added that in the first stage, Syrian trucks not meeting specifications will be allowed into the border province adjacent to Syria after crossing, while compliant trucks will be granted passage to other countries. Turkish trucks, in turn, will be able to transit through Syria to reach Jordan. Uraloglu further highlighted that Turkiye carried out numerous projects in roads and railways inside Syria, pointing out that reviving the railway line between Turkiye's Gaziantep province and Syria's Aleppo is a priority, requiring USD120 million for rehabilitation. Coordination is underway with international institutions to secure funding in cooperation with Syria.
He noted that damage to Hejaz railway line is less extensive, and repair works will be financed by Turkiye. He also stated that Turkish companies had won a tender to renovate and expand Damascus International Airport, while procedures regarding Aleppo Airport are still in progress. The Turkish transport minister concluded by stressing that Syria needs comprehensive infrastructure and superstructure projects, underlining that the key challenge lies in securing financing sources.
