Damascus: Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the Syrian Arab Republic Asaad Al Shaibani met on Wednesday with World Bank Division Director for the Middle East Department, Jean-Christophe Carret, who is visiting Damascus. The meeting focused on discussions to enhance development and reconstruction cooperation between Syria and the World Bank.
According to Qatar News Agency, the meeting comes at a pivotal moment following the recent decision by the US Treasury Department to end its sanctions program on Syria. This decision marks a strategic turning point in Damascus's economic and diplomatic relations, presenting an opportunity for Syria to reintegrate into the international financial system after enduring years of restrictions and economic isolation.
The discussions between Al Shaibani and Carret are viewed as a significant step towards rebuilding and developing Syria's economic infrastructure. The World Bank's involvement could potentially facilitate the flow of international financial aid and investment into the country, which has been largely cut off from such resources due to previous sanctions.
The lifting of sanctions is anticipated to open new avenues for cooperation and growth, allowing Syria to engage more actively with international financial institutions and partners. This development is likely to have a substantial impact on the country's future economic policies and international relations.
