Syria: People’s Assembly Elections Set for October

Doha: Syria's Supreme Committee for People's Assembly Elections announced on Sunday that parliamentary elections for a transitional legislature will be held on October 5, in accordance with the constitutional declaration issued following the fall of the Assad regime.

According to Qatar News Agency, the committee confirmed that elections will be held on October 5 across the electoral districts in the Syrian governorates. The new People's Assembly, which will serve a transitional legislative term of five years, will comprise 210 members - 140 elected by electoral bodies formed by subcommittees appointed by the Supreme Election Committee, and 70 appointed by Interim President Ahmad Al-Shar'a.

Under the constitutional declaration, members of parliament will serve for two and a half years, renewable, and will exercise legislative authority until adoption of a permanent constitution and holding of new elections.
