South Africa and Egypt Secure Final Quarterfinal Spots in U-20 AFCON

Cairo: South Africa and Egypt have secured the final two spots in the quarterfinals of the TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, currently taking place in Egypt, following a 1-1 draw between South Africa and Zambia, and a narrow 1-0 win for Egypt over Tanzania in the final matches of Group A. According to Qatar News Agency, South Africa and Zambia shared the spoils with a goal apiece at the Air Defense Stadium in Cairo. South Africa struck first through Katlego Letlhatlha in the 8th minute, but Zambia responded quickly with an equalizer from Boniface Mwepu in the 12th minute. Meanwhile, hosts Egypt battled to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tanzania at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia, with Ahmed Sharaf netting the decisive goal in the 7th minute. With the conclusion of Group A, South Africa topped the standings with 7 points, edging out Sierra Leone, who also finished with 7 points and had already secured qualification in the previous round, on goal difference. Egypt also ended the group st age with 7 points but placed third due to inferior goal difference. South Africa advanced as group winners, while Egypt progressed as the best third-placed team across all groups. They join DR Congo, who placed third in Group C with 4 points. Tunisia, third in Group B with 3 points, exited the tournament after failing to qualify among the best third-placed teams. In the quarterfinals, South Africa will face DR Congo, with the winner set to meet the victor of the clash between Nigeria (Group B runners-up) and Senegal (Group C runners-up). Egypt, on the other hand, will face Ghana, the Group C winners. The winner of that tie will go on to face either Morocco (Group B winners) or Sierra Leone (Group A runners-up) in the semifinals. The tournament features 13 teams, with Group A comprising five teams, while Groups B and C each include four. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, qualify for the quarterfinals.
