Manama: The Shura Council participated in the meeting of the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs and Sustainable Development of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, which was held Monday in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The Council was represented at the meeting by HE Member of the Shura Council and Vice President of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly Eng. Ahmed bin Hitmi Al Hitmi, and HE Member of the Council Saud bin Jassim Al Buainain.
According to Qatar News Agency, the meeting discussed the most prominent economic and developmental issues on the Asian scene, mechanisms for coordinating parliamentary efforts to enhance the achievement of sustainable development goals, in addition to reviewing draft resolutions aimed at supporting parliamentary cooperation in the fields of economy and climate change.
In his statement during the meeting, HE Al Hitmi pointed out that achieving sustainable development in Asia and the world remains dependent on promoting peace, stability, and respect for international law, warning that the aggressive practices of the Israeli occupation, which have reached the point of targeting civilians and civilian facilities in Qatar, pose a direct threat to the path of development and human security.
He affirmed that such violations not only hinder countries’ efforts to build strong economies and prosperous societies, but also undermine the foundations upon which parliamentary partnerships are based to address economic and climate challenges and achieve common sustainable development goals.
His Excellency stressed that the continuation of such attacks threatens food, water, and environmental security, and hinders international efforts to combat poverty and climate change, which contradicts the fundamental principles of sustainable development endorsed by the United Nations.
HE Al Hitmi called on Asian and international parliamentary councils and unions to assume their responsibilities in condemning these violations, and to work jointly to protect peoples, establish peace, and provide a safe environment that enables countries to achieve their aspirations for comprehensive and sustainable development.
