Sahara/C24: Autonomy Initiative, ‘Only Basis’ for Political Settlement (Capo Verde)

Capo Verde has voiced in New York its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, deeming it “the only basis” for a just and lasting political settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

Morocco’s autonomy plan is “the only basis for a just and lasting political settlement of this regional long-standing 4-decade dispute,” said Capo Verde’s permanent representative to the UN during the C24 annual meeting.

The settlement of this dispute is “a main condition for the stability and security of the Sahel region, so strategically important to the peaceful and sustainable development in northern, western, central and eastern Africa”, he added.

Capo Verde also reiterated its “firm support” for the ongoing UN-facilitated negotiations under the auspices of the Secretary General and his Personal Envoy for the Sahara, while welcoming and encouraging the personal envoy’s efforts to facilitate the relaunch of the political process towards a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution.

Cabo Verde’s representative encouraged all parties to resume the round-table process, in accordance with the Security Council resolution 2602 and to remain committed, to achieve a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution based on compromise.
