S. Koreans Vote for New President After Former Leader’s Ouster

Doha: South Korean voters are heading to the polls on Tuesday to elect a new president, after former leader Yoon Suk-yeol was ousted over his declaration of martial law. The two major contenders in the presidential election are liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung and conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo.

According to Qatar News Agency, voting began at 6 a.m. (local time) and will run until 8 p.m. at 14,295 polling stations nationwide, as reported by the National Election Commission. A total of 44,391,871 people are registered to vote, including the more than 15.4 million who cast their ballots during two-day early voting last week.

The new president will take office immediately without a transition period.
