Doha: South Korea, the United States, and Japan have commenced a trilateral multi-domain exercise, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security cooperation among the three nations.
According to Qatar News Agency, the five-day Freedom Edge exercise is taking place in international waters east and south of South Korea's southern island of Jeju, running from September 15 to 19. This exercise marks the third round of trilateral drills, with previous rounds having been conducted in June and November of the previous year.
This marks the first such exercise since President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea and US President Donald Trump assumed office. The Korean military has stated that the exercise aims to enhance interoperability among the three nations to maintain solid and stable trilateral cooperation.
The US Indo-Pacific Command emphasized that the exercise demonstrates the countries' shared commitment to achieving and maintaining peace in the Asia-Pacific region. The activities will include training focused on improving ballistic missile defense capabilities, air defense exercises, medical evacuation training, and maritime interdiction operation training.
