Doha: Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed, in a phone call Monday with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, relations between the two countries and ways to develop them. They also discussed a number of regional issues of common interest, most notably the situation in the South Caucasus region, in addition to developments related to the Iranian nuclear program. During the call, the two presidents also discussed the outcomes of the Russian-American summit held in Alaska two weeks ago between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Russian President described the course of relations between Moscow and Tehran as "constructive and constantly growing" and noted that "cooperation between the two countries in the field of the Bushehr nuclear power plant is progressing satisfactorily." He emphasized that all aspects of technical cooperation are on schedule and that new fuel is currently being transferred to the plant.
For his part, the Iranian president expressed his appreciation for Russia's support for his country's right to enrich uranium. He stressed that "Iran, based on its ideological principles and defensive doctrine, has never sought and will never seek to possess nuclear weapons."
