Russian, French Presidents Discuss Middle East Tensions in Phone Call

Doha: Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call Tuesday with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron to discuss developments in the Middle East.

According to Qatar News Agency, the two leaders discussed in detail the situation in the region, particularly in the context of the Iranian-Israeli confrontation and U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

They emphasized the special responsibility of their countries, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, in maintaining peace and security, including in the Middle East, and in upholding the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.

The statement added that both sides stressed the importance of respecting Iran's legitimate right to develop peaceful nuclear energy, and the need for continued compliance with its obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), including cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
