Russian Corner at Katara Inaugurated with Bust of First Human in Space

Doha: General Manager of the Cultural Village Foundation, Katara, Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti inaugurated the Russian Corner in front of the Al Thuraya Planetarium, Building No. 41, in the presence of HE Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the State of Qatar Dmitry Dogadkin, along with a number of diplomats, cultural, and artistic figures.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Russian Corner features a bust of Yuri Gagarin, the Soviet cosmonaut and the first human to travel into outer space. This sculpture, created by Russian artist Alexei Leonov, pays tribute to one of the most iconic figures of scientific achievement in the 20th century.

The bust was presented to Katara in 2025 by the International Public Charity Fund (Dialogue of Cultures, United World), in cooperation with the Russian Embassy, as a testament to the deep cultural and historical ties between the two countries.

In a statement, the Foundation affirmed that the Russian Corner at Katara embodies a cultural and human dimension that reflects the shared values uniting peoples. It also enhances Katara's status as a global hub for cultural exchange and dialogue among civilizations.

The Foundation noted that the Russian Corner is part of a series of artistic installations spread throughout the Cultural Village, including the Spanish, Turkish, Filipino, Ecuadorian, and Georgian Corners, which highlight the contributions of various cultures to the journey of humanity.

These corners are the result of close cooperation between Katara and several embassies accredited to the State of Qatar. They embody the Foundation's mission to build bridges of communication among peoples through arts and culture. They also reflect Katara's vision of fostering understanding and human rapprochement, while offering a rich cultural experience to visitors from around the world.
