Doha: Russia downplayed on Wednesday the significance of France's intention to deploy its jets equipped with nuclear weapons across the European Union (EU) as a means to enhance security on the continent.
According to Qatar News Agency, in response to French President Emmanuel Macron's statement on Tuesday expressing readiness to discuss this deployment, Russia's Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said that such a step will neither contribute to security nor stability on the continent.
Peskov added, "Now the entire system of strategic stability and security is in a deplorable state for understandable reasons." The Kremlin's spokesperson reiterated Russia's stance that ending the war with Ukraine hinges on removing threats from Russia's borders and preventing Ukraine from joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
