Doha: Fresh rounds of attacks between Russia and Ukraine on Friday left at least one person dead, several wounded and caused significant infrastructure damage as both sides reported large-scale drone and missile strikes.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported that its forces shot down 216 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 66 over the Krasnodar region and 45 over Saratov, describing the barrage as an "intensive Ukrainian attempt to target the Russian heartland."
Russia's operational command in Krasnodar reported that a civilian vessel was struck by debris from a drone, injuring three crew members. The attack also damaged an oil depot and apartment buildings in the port of Novorossiysk on the Black Sea, where emergency services reported a fire was extinguished at a refinery.
In Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the city endured a large-scale Russian missile and drone strike in the early hours of Friday, describing it as "massive." Ukrainian emergency services reported one person killed and at least 11 wounded in the attack, though some local sources put wounded numbers higher. According to rescue teams, more than 40 people were evacuated from damaged residential buildings in several districts.
Explosions echoed across central Kyiv as air-defence systems engaged incoming drones and missiles. The attack damaged infrastructure including residential high-rises, schools, and medical facilities, and disrupted heating systems in parts of the city. The wave of strikes comes amid an escalation of hostilities between Moscow and Kyiv. Ukraine has increasingly targeted inland Russian infrastructure including oil and gas facilities and maritime assets, while Russia continues to bombard Ukrainian cities and critical services.
