Bucharest: Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has announced his resignation, a day after the ruling coalition's joint candidate failed to win the presidential re-run and qualify for the runoff.
According to Qatar News Agency, the coalition's candidate, Crin Antonescu, came in third in the first round of voting held Sunday, narrowly behind Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan. George Simion secured first place with 40.9 percent of the vote.
Ciolacu submitted his resignation to the president and proposed to his colleagues to leave the government, which will therefore not have the necessary majority in parliament.
