Rescue Operations Underway for Missing Miners in Indonesia’s Papua Province

Papua Province: Rescue teams in Indonesia have launched a search for 19 people missing after a landslide struck a small gold mine in Papua Province, eastern Indonesia, following two days of heavy rainfall. Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure reported that heavy rains caused a landslide at a small mine operated by local residents in the Arfak Mountains of West Papua Province.

According to Qatar News Agency, the landslide last Friday hit temporary shelters used by miners, resulting in at least one fatality and four injuries. However, 19 other individuals remain unaccounted for, and rescue operations continue in an effort to locate them.

Small-scale and illegal mining activities are common in Indonesia, often leading to accidents due to the remote locations of mineral resources and the challenging regulatory conditions faced by authorities. In a related incident, at least 15 people lost their lives in September 2024 when an unlicensed gold mine collapsed in West Sumatra Province.
