Regional Alliances Highlighted as Key to Strengthening ‘Middle Power’ Economies

Doha:Participants at the Global Perspectives event in Doha emphasized the importance of enhancing the role of middle power economies in the global economic order. This focus includes expanding regional and international partnerships, diversifying trade and investment routes, and improving coordination among nations to handle economic and geopolitical changes.

According to Qatar News Agency, the discussion explored opportunities for African, Asian, and Middle Eastern economies to bolster their negotiating power and create alternatives to traditional centers of influence amid competition among the world’s largest economies.

The session also highlighted the need for building alliances across continents and regions to promote economic and diplomatic cooperation on common issues. Luigi Di Maio, the EU's Special Representative for the Gulf, asserted that the current challenges extend beyond market integration and investments to diplomacy and international relations, highlighting the EU's experience in addressing common challenges.

Di Maio noted a growing trend toward forming regional and international alliances, enabling regional powers to tackle their issues and coordinate with other regions. He emphasized that while the success of this path will be determined by future developments, it is an essential strategy given the ongoing global transformations.

The session concluded with a call to uphold the multilateral international legal order and foster cooperation among nations in the emerging multipolar global system.
