Kuwait City: HE President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and Senior Vice-President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani attended the official opening of the 45th General Assembly of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) on Sunday at the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Center in Kuwait City. The General Assembly gathered delegates from 45 National Olympic Committees across the continent.
According to Qatar News Agency, the event was hosted by the Kuwait Olympic Committee and featured official remarks, a cultural performance, and a dinner to welcome the delegations. A notable speaker at the event was International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Dr. Thomas Bach, who delivered one of his final addresses before his term concludes in June.
The evening featured Team Qatar legend Mutaz Barshim, a prominent Olympian and highly decorated athlete in Asian track and field history. Barshim was invited to speak during the formalities, where he shared insights into his Olympic journey and the significant role of sports in fostering opportunity, national pride, and collective identity.
The spotlight on Qatar during the General Assembly comes as Doha prepares to host the 21st Asian Games in 2030. Recognized as a global sporting hub, Doha continues to lead in regional sport development, enhancing athlete access, and supporting the growth of Olympic institutions in Asia and beyond.
Other notable attendees included Vice-President of the Olympic Council of Asia for West Asia and Second Vice-President of the QOC Dr. Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, and Secretary General of the QOC Jassim Al Buenain.
