Doha: In line with the directives of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and as a continuation of Qatar's efforts to assist its Syrian brethren in the electricity sector, the Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD) has announced the commencement of the second phase of its electricity support initiative, which boasts a capacity of 800 megawatts.
According to Qatar News Agency, this initiative is a collaborative effort between the QFFD and the Syrian Ministry of Energy. The second phase is set to begin on August 2, 2025, and will last for an entire year. It will provide electricity supplies routed through Azerbaijan and Turkiye to the Syrian Arab Republic. The electricity will initially be received at the Aleppo power station and subsequently distributed across various cities and neighborhoods in Syria.
The initiative aims to enhance the electricity supply to 5 hours per day, marking a 40% daily improvement for more than 5 million subscribers across Syria. This effort is also expected to bolster energy sustainability in commercial areas, factories, and utilities.
The project's first phase, which had a capacity of 400 megawatts, played a crucial role in stabilizing the power grid, supporting the industrial sector, and increasing operating hours in key areas from 16 to 24 hours per day. This brings QFFD's total contributions to the electricity sector in Syria to over $760 million, underscoring Qatar's unwavering commitment to supporting the Syrian people and reinforcing essential infrastructure to ensure a safe and dignified life for citizens.
