Qatar’s Presidency of GPDNet Extended Until 2028

Doha: The General Assembly meeting of the Global Public Diplomacy Network (GPDNet) announced Tuesday that it has unanimously voted to extend the presidency of the State of Qatar, represented by the Cultural Village Foundation- Katara, for a third consecutive term spanning from 2025 to 2028.

According to Qatar News Agency, this decision is a testament to the success Katara has achieved in leading the network and enhancing its role in cultural and public diplomacy. The decision was taken during the General Assembly meeting held at Katara with participation from 21 countries, and the meeting is set to continue for three days.

The agenda includes reinforcing cultural partnerships and strategizing on leveraging new technologies in digital diplomacy. A panel discussion addressing AI and digital media's challenges and opportunities in public diplomacy was also part of the meeting.

A media workshop is scheduled for Wednesday, focusing on the impact of media on building positive environments for a shared global future, providing journalists a platform to discuss media's role in public diplomacy and cross-cultural understanding.

The meeting serves as a strategic platform to share expertise and forge communications to counter digital era challenges, enhance public diplomacy, and elevate international cooperation. This aligns with GPDNet's commitment to promoting cultural dialogue and engagement among nations.

Katara's extended presidency is seen as an opportunity to further the network's success and strengthen its role as a diplomatic platform fostering dialogue and understanding globally. Qatar was first elected to the presidency during GPDNet's 5th General Assembly in November 2018, officially assuming the role in May 2019, and was re-elected for a second term in January 2021.
