Doha: HE Minister of Public Health Mansoor bin Ebrahim bin Saad Al Mahmoud stated that the wise leadership's continued support for the healthcare sector has contributed significantly to its progress in improving the health and well-being of the community. He pointed out that the latest indicators show substantial improvements in the sector, with Qatar ranked first in the Arab world and 18th globally for healthcare services according to this year's Numbeo index.
According to Qatar News Agency, His Excellency noted that key indicators have improved significantly, including a rise in life expectancy from 74 to over 82 years. He emphasized the country's focus on ensuring these years of life are healthy, with a strong emphasis on prevention, physical activity, and healthy nutrition.
HE Al Mahmoud highlighted significant advances in healthcare infrastructure, particularly through public and private health facilities and the health workforce. Hospital bed capacity has increased to over 5,000, and the number of healthcare practitioners has risen to over 57,000 in both the public and private sectors. Additionally, he praised the improvement of healthcare services, including health centers and emergency medical services.
Progress in food safety systems was also discussed, with internationally accredited laboratories and initiatives such as the classification of food establishments, allowing customers to assess adherence to health standards.
HE Al Mahmoud underscored the ministry's support for the private sector, highlighting its importance as a key partner in Qatar's healthcare growth. He mentioned the organization of biannual forums with private sector representatives to discuss aspirations and challenges and noted that the ministry has a portfolio of projects to enhance this partnership. Health insurance is expected to improve the quality and competitiveness of the private sector.
On health tourism, HE the Minister noted efforts to establish Qatar as a regional hub for medical and wellness tourism, with specialized hospitals and distinguished services. MOPH is collaborating with the Ministry of Interior and Qatar Tourism to launch a medical visa to facilitate hospital visits.
He also highlighted MOPH's role in strengthening family cohesion through health services, including home care for the elderly and people with disabilities, private nursing services, and the delivery of medicines and medical supplies to households.
Addressing healthcare system challenges, he stated that nearly 10 million annual public healthcare visits lead to long wait times. Efforts to reduce wait times include expanding clinics, improving efficiency, and collaborating with the private sector. Initiatives like evening clinics, canceling repeated appointments, addressing no-shows, and improving coordination between Hamad Medical Corporation and Primary Health Care Corporation have contributed to decreased wait times. Although some specialty appointment targets remain unmet, efforts continue to further reduce wait times, and the health insurance system is expected to expand service access.
