Qatar’s Continued Humanitarian Support for Palestine and Syria

Doha: In its editorial, Al-Raya newspaper highlighted the National Human Rights Committee's condemnation of the grave violations committed against the brotherly Palestinian people due to the ongoing aggression since Oct. 7, 2023. This aggression represents a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and international human rights law obligations, including repeated deliberate attacks against civilians and civilian facilities.

According to Qatar News Agency, the newspaper noted HE Chairperson of National Human Rights Committee Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah's assertion that Israel's actions have created a difficult humanitarian reality. This includes depriving civilians of basic human rights necessary for survival, such as food, water, and healthcare, through deliberate targeting of homes, hospitals, and civilian institutions.

The paper emphasized that the international community must hold Israel accountable for its actions and ensure the establishment of a Palestinian state fulfilling the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. The Gaza Strip is experiencing a catastrophic humanitarian situation due to the consequences of Israeli aggression, including destruction, displacement, and ethnic cleansing, compounded by the imposed starvation by the occupation.

In conclusion, Al-Raya highlighted Qatar's position that international silence in the face of these crimes constitutes a crime itself, perpetuating impunity and undermining efforts to establish criminal justice and uphold international law.

In another issue, The Peninsula reported on Qatar's longstanding support for the Syrian people since the civil war began in March 2011. Qatar has provided aid to refugees and internally displaced persons, with total aid exceeding $2 billion.

In July, Qatar sent a team to assist in firefighting operations in Latakia and provide humanitarian aid to mitigate the effects of the fires. The paper also noted Qatar's initiative at the 3rd International Pledging Conference for Syria in 2015, pledging $100 million for a vocational education and training fund for Syrians and hosting the 10th major donors group meeting for Syria in 2024.

Qatar's assistance includes the supply of natural gas for electricity generation. The Qatar Fund For Development announced the inauguration of the Turkiye-Syria Natural Gas Pipeline and the commencement of natural gas supply by Azerbaijan to Syria. Additionally, the second phase of electricity support to Syria, with a capacity of 800 megawatts, has been launched, The Peninsula added.
