Qatar’s Commitment to Cybersecurity Highlighted with UN Cybercrime Centre in Doha

Vienna: The State of Qatar announced that the establishment of the United Nations Regional Centre for Combating Cybercrime in Doha underscores its dedication to supporting international organizations and fostering multilateralism. This announcement was made during a speech in Vienna by HE Ambassador Jassim Yacoub Al Hammadi, who is Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations.

According to Qatar News Agency, Ambassador Al Hammadi emphasized the pivotal role that the UN Regional Centre for Combating Cybercrime in Doha can play in aiding member states in the fight against cybercrime. The Centre aims to achieve this through capacity building, knowledge sharing, and enhanced international cooperation. He also highlighted the additional responsibilities placed on the Centre following the adoption of the UN Convention against Cybercrime last year, particularly in promoting the convention and enhancing coordination between countries.

Ambassador Al Hammadi urged member states, especially developing countries, to maximize the benefits of the courses and publications offered by the Centre. He advocated for expanding the Centre's activities, increasing training programs, and facilitating countries' accession to the Convention on Cybercrime. The goal is to use the convention's tools to bolster international cooperation and enhance national security.

Meanwhile, Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Hammadi, Assistant Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reiterated the Centre's success as a model of international cooperation against cyber threats. During a speech at a side event organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna, he praised the Centre's vital role and the importance of international collaboration in combating cybercrime.

Al Hammadi also pointed out the diverse needs of countries in addressing cybercrime, including capacity building and technical tools, which are crucial for enhancing joint efforts. He noted that Qatar's collaboration with the UN office began in 2017, leading to the Centre's opening in 2019. He stressed that a unified global approach to combating cybercrime is crucial for raising awareness and ensuring readiness, particularly in the least developed countries, to confront these threats.
