Doha: In a series of editorials on Thursday, Qatari newspapers highlighted the State of Qatar's warm reception of the announcement by His Excellency Sir Keir Starmer, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, regarding the UK's intention to recognize the State of Palestine and support the two-state solution.
According to Qatar News Agency, the newspapers emphasized Qatar's strong commitment to supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people until they achieve a fully sovereign independent state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. This stance is firmly in line with international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.
In its editorial, Al-Raya newspaper expressed that Qatar views the UK's announcement as a significant development aligning with international legitimacy and pertinent Security Council resolutions. The editorial underscored the importance of global recognition of the State of Palestine, citing the ongoing sacrifices of the Palestinian people who continue to face Israeli ethnic cleansing. Al-Raya called for immediate and decisive global action to end the conflict in Gaza and urged Israel's withdrawal from the Strip.
Similarly, Al-Sharq newspaper noted Qatar's welcoming of the UK Prime Minister's announcement, highlighting that it coincides with a joint appeal by 15 Western countries, including France, Australia, and Canada. This aligns with the consensus reached at the United Nations High-Level International Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution. Al-Sharq emphasized Qatar's call for all nations yet to recognize Palestine to uphold international law and United Nations resolutions, promoting peace, security, and the rightful claims of the Palestinian people.
The newspaper concluded by stressing that increased recognition of Palestine by more countries would significantly enhance efforts to end the Israeli occupation and halt illegal practices undermining peace. This would support a just and comprehensive solution based on international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative.
