Qatar Urges UN Action Following Iranian Missile and Drone Attacks

New york: The State of Qatar has issued its 11th identical letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the President of the Security Council for April, Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, highlighting recent Iranian attacks on its territories. The letter underscores a violation of Qatar's national sovereignty and a threat to regional stability.

According to Qatar News Agency, the letter, dispatched by Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, detailed the Ministry of Defense's report on drone attacks by Iran on March 28, 29, and 30, 2026. Qatar's armed forces successfully intercepted these drones. However, on April 1, three cruise missiles were launched, of which two were intercepted, while the third struck an oil tanker leased to QatarEnergy.

The correspondence specifies that coordination with relevant authorities allowed for the evacuation of the tanker's 21-member crew without human casualties. QatarEnergy confirmed the tanker, "Aqua 1," was targeted, yet no environmental damage or crew harm occurred. The attack happened despite the Security Council's Resolution No. 2817 (2026), condemning Iran's actions and urging cessation.

Qatar's letter reaffirmed the violation of Security Council Resolution 2817 (2026) and urged the Council to uphold international peace and security by acting against these violations. The letter stressed that Iran's attacks, targeting civilian infrastructure, breach the 1949 Geneva Conventions, international humanitarian law principles, and entail international responsibility for damages.

Qatar reserves the right to respond under Article 51 of the UN Charter, asserting its commitment to defending its sovereignty and citizen safety. The letter requested its circulation as an official Security Council document, and Qatar plans to keep the UN informed of future developments.
