Geneva: The State of Qatar participated in the High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament held in Geneva. Qatar was represented at the event by Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva Jawhara bint Abdulaziz Al Suwaidi.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Suwaidi affirmed that the international system is undergoing a critical phase with an increasing number of armed conflicts, a decline in commitment to international law and the UN Charter, rising polarization, geopolitical competition, nuclear modernization programs, and the integration of emerging technologies into military systems. Additionally, there are growing risks of outer space weaponization. She emphasized that these developments present unprecedented challenges to the disarmament and non-proliferation architecture.
Al Suwaidi expressed Qatar's strong condemnation of the ongoing Israeli aggression and crimes against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip. She highlighted issues such as targeting civilians and vital facilities, imposing restrictions on humanitarian aid, and using heavy and internationally prohibited weapons.
She noted that 2026 marks a significant milestone for the global nuclear order with the Eleventh Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. This treaty forms the cornerstone of the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and is essential for pursuing nuclear disarmament. Al Suwaidi stressed that disarmament is a humanitarian, security, and developmental necessity.
Al Suwaidi reaffirmed the urgency of establishing a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction to enhance regional security and stability. She reiterated Qatar's support for United Nations efforts in this regard.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar in Geneva renewed Qatar's commitment to disarmament principles and objectives, promoting international security, and supporting international mechanisms aimed at disarmament. These efforts are crucial in strengthening peace and security at both regional and international levels.
