Doha: The Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies, in partnership with the Doha Forum, will host the Qatar Mediation Forum 2025 on December 7th and 8th. This significant event will convene diplomats, policymakers, and mediation experts from the United Nations, the African Union, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and the International Crisis Group to deliberate on the pressing challenges facing conflict mediation.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies highlighted that the forum will occur amidst escalating armed conflicts, weakening diplomatic norms, and increasing geopolitical tensions, which are exerting immense pressure on peacemaking processes worldwide.
Dr. Ghassan Al Kahlout, Director of the Center for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies, remarked that the Qatar Mediation Forum signifies an investment in developing informed mediation practices. He emphasized that as the rules of peacemaking undergo significant transformations, the forum is set to tackle complex questions about the future, uniting mediators and experts in peacemaking.
Dr. Al Kahlout further noted that the success of the previous forum underscores Qatar's pivotal role in international mediation and its dedication to fostering global peace and security. Key topics will include mediation in a changing international system, regional cooperation by Gulf States, and diplomacy's potential to address great power competition and nuclear risks.
The second day will feature discussions on lessons from ongoing conflicts in Sudan, the Gaza Strip, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Additional panels will explore mediation in a multipolar world, protecting mediators, and supporting local-level mediation.
All sessions will focus on how principles-based mediation can adapt in a rapidly changing world. The event will culminate in a report summarizing key insights and recommendations to enhance effective and inclusive mediation efforts.
