Qatar Mediates Peace Talks Between Colombian Government and Gaitanista Army

Doha: The State of Qatar has announced the successful conclusion of the first round of mediation talks between the Government of the Republic of Colombia and the self-proclaimed Gaitanista Army of Colombia (EGC). This initiative underscores Qatar's commitment to resolving international conflicts through dialogue and peaceful means.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Qatar hosted these initial negotiations in Doha from September 14 to 18. The talks were held at the request of the Colombian government, aiming to promote reconciliation and address the challenges posed by armed groups in Colombia, particularly focusing on disarmament and peacebuilding efforts.

Both parties have agreed to reconvene for further discussions in Doha, though the exact date remains to be determined. HE Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, highlighted the structured approach of the peace process, which began with confidence-building measures and inclusive dialogue.

Dr. Al Khulaifi emphasized the significance of human dignity, human rights, and legal adherence, while ensuring the involvement of all parties, including those communities affected by the conflict. He reiterated Qatar's commitment to fostering peaceful dialogue, supporting Colombia's development, and playing a role in eradicating illicit economies and controlling arms within the country.

Furthermore, the Minister reaffirmed Qatar's position as a reliable partner in international mediation, committed to facilitating a neutral dialogue platform rooted in mutual respect and international law. Qatar's efforts in this regard are a testament to its dedication to global peace and stability.
