Doha: The State of Qatar has reiterated that strengthening multilateral cooperation is crucial for reforming peacekeeping missions in response to the significant challenges they face, including regional threats, climate change, disinformation, and funding shortages. This statement was made by Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani, the Second Secretary of Qatar's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, during the Fourth Committee Meeting on Agenda Item 51 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. According to Qatar News Agency, Sheikh Jassim highlighted that peacekeeping operations are essential tools for maintaining global peace and security. He noted Qatar's commitment to supporting international peacekeeping efforts through participation in peacekeeping forces, budget contributions, and involvement in reform initiatives. Qatar's early accession to the UN Secretary-General's Action for Peacekeeping initiative was mentioned as a point of pride, underscoring the nation's dedication to enhancing peacekee ping missions and protecting peacekeepers and civilians. Sheikh Jassim emphasized the need to implement the "Pact for the Future" and its peace plan proposed by the Secretary-General, focusing on enhancing the effectiveness, diversity, and inclusivity of peacekeeping missions. He also highlighted Qatar's appreciation for the sacrifices made by peacekeepers, particularly in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and called for collective international efforts to counter aggression and disinformation campaigns against peacekeeping missions. In response to repeated attacks on UNIFIL, including an incident on November 7 involving Malaysian force members, Sheikh Jassim called for an immediate and independent investigation and urged the international community to pressure the Israeli occupation to cease its aggressive actions. He also mentioned Qatar's signing of the Joint Statement by UNIFIL troop-contributing countries, expressing full support for the mission's mandate in southern Lebanon. Sheik h Jassim concluded by recognizing the importance of integrating the Women, Peace, and Security agenda into peacekeeping operations and welcomed efforts to increase women's participation at all levels, including leadership roles.
