Doha: The State of Qatar has sent a second identical message to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the President of the UN Security Council for the month of March, Michael Waltz, regarding a recent Iranian attack on its territory. The communication highlights the incident as a blatant violation of Qatar's national sovereignty and an escalation that poses a threat to regional security and stability.
According to Qatar News Agency, the message was delivered by Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the UN. The correspondence revealed that the Qatar Amiri Air Force successfully intercepted two SU24 aircraft originating from Iran. In addition, seven ballistic missiles were intercepted by Qatar's air defenses, and five drones were neutralized by both the Qatar Amiri Air Force and Qatar Amiri Naval Forces, which had targeted various locations within the country.
The message further detailed that Qatar faced two drone attacks from Iran. The first attack was aimed at water tanks at the Mesaieed Power Plant, while the second targeted an energy facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City operated by QatarEnergy. Fortunately, these attacks did not result in human casualties.
The authorities in Qatar are currently assessing the damages and losses from these attacks and have committed to keeping the UN and the UNSC updated on the situation. The message underscored Qatar's strong condemnation of the attacks and asserted its right to respond under Article 51 of the UN Charter, in a manner proportionate to the nature of the attack, to defend its sovereignty and protect its national interests.
Qatar has also requested that this letter be circulated as an official document of the UN Security Council.
