Doha: The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has announced that the national team will hold a training camp in South Korea as part of the third phase of preparations for the 31st edition of the FIBA Asia Cup. The tournament will be hosted in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from August 5-17, with 16 teams participating.
According to Qatar News Agency, the team is set to depart for South Korea on Wednesday. The delegation will be led by Federation President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb, and includes Secretary-General Saadon Sabah Al Kuwari, National Teams Director Jassim Ashkanani, Turkish head coach Hakan Demir, and 16 players.
During their time in South Korea, the Qatar squad will engage in two friendly matches on July 19 and 20. Following the training camp, they will return to Doha to participate in a mini-tournament from July 28 to August 1. This tournament will feature teams from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Japan at the multipurpose Lusail Hall.
Qatar's journey in the FIBA Asia Cup will begin with a match against Lebanon on August 6, in Group A. The group also includes Australia and South Korea. The group winners will qualify directly to the quarterfinals, while the second and third-place teams will compete in play-in rounds.
In the meantime, Qatar's reserve team is continuing its campaign in the 44th William Jones Cup in Taiwan. After a loss to the Philippines Strong Group with a score of 54-81, they are preparing to face Chinese Taipei (B) tomorrow. The delegation, led by Mishal Abdullah Al Maliki, includes 13 players who will also play against Bahrain on July 17, Chinese Taipei (A) on July 19, and Malaysia on July 20. These matches are in preparation for the 26th Arab Basketball Championship, which will be hosted in Bahrain from July 25 to August 2.
