Doha: The State of Qatar and the Republic of Indonesia are fortifying their longstanding relationship, which has grown steadily since it was established nearly 50 years ago. According to Qatar News Agency, the visit of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to Doha marks a significant milestone in this evolving relationship. President Subianto is set to meet with HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani at the Amiri Diwan to discuss ways to enhance cooperation, particularly in economic, trade, and investment sectors. This visit is poised to inject new momentum into the bilateral ties between the two countries.
Diplomatic relations between Qatar and Indonesia were inaugurated in 1976, with embassies established in each other's capitals by the late 1990s. Since 1995, numerous high-level visits have occurred, including a 2017 trip by HH the Amir to Indonesia and multiple visits by former Indonesian presidents to Qatar.
In recent interactions, HH the Amir welcomed President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka during their visit to Doha for the Fourth Qatar Economic Forum. The economic relationship between Qatar and Indonesia is robust, with bilateral trade growing by over 150 percent in recent years. Qatari investments in Indonesia have expanded into telecommunications, banking, and energy, while Indonesian companies actively invest in Qatar. The Qatar-Indonesia 2023 Year of Culture further reinforced their ties through numerous programs celebrating their shared heritage.
Educational collaboration is also thriving, with agreements enhancing student exchanges and joint research initiatives. Qatar supports development and humanitarian projects in Indonesia, including disaster relief and infrastructure investments, while the Indonesian community in Qatar contributes significantly to the local economy.
