Qatar Advocates for Diplomatic Efforts Amid Iranian Nuclear Program Tensions

Vienna: The State of Qatar has called for calm, de-escalation, and the continuation of negotiations to achieve a diplomatic resolution to issues related to the Iranian nuclear program. Qatar emphasized that facts have demonstrated the necessity of dialogue and diplomacy to ensure peace and stability, preventing further catastrophes in the region and beyond.

According to Qatar News Agency, this statement was delivered by HE Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations and international organizations in Vienna, Jassim bin Yacoub Al Hammadi, during an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board of Governors in Vienna. His Excellency encouraged the IAEA Director General to engage with Iran to facilitate technical discussions and diplomatic solutions regarding nuclear matters.

His Excellency reiterated Qatar's condemnation of the Israeli attack on Iranian territory and urged the international community to urgently halt such violations. He stressed Qatar's opposition to the use of force outside the framework of the United Nations Charter, criticizing Israel's justification of its attack on Iran as lacking legal basis. He underscored the importance of respecting state sovereignty and prohibiting the use of force without UN Security Council authorization or self-defense under Article 51 of the Charter.

HE Al Hammadi highlighted the responsibility of the international community and the UN Security Council to uphold these principles, warning that their violation leads to chaos in international relations. He also condemned armed attacks on nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards, noting the potential for significant harm to people and the environment, and serious implications for nuclear safety and security.

His Excellency praised IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi's statement before the UN Security Council on June 13, which reaffirmed that any armed attack on nuclear facilities devoted to peaceful purposes violates the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law. Grossi warned that such attacks could result in radioactive releases with grave consequences beyond the boundaries of the attacked state.
