Qatar Achieves Cultural Milestone with Arab Bisht’s UNESCO Recognition

Doha: The State of Qatar is celebrating a significant cultural achievement following the successful listing of the Arab bisht on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. This milestone was affirmed during the 20th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), held in India from December 8 to 13.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatari delegation was led by HE Minister of Culture Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Hamad Al-Thani. The session marked a historic moment as the Arab bisht became the first joint Arab file led by Qatar, with the participation of nine Arab countries, to be inscribed on UNESCO's prestigious list. This accomplishment underscores the significance of Gulf and Arab heritage, highlighting its role in shaping collective identity and preserving civilizational memory.

The inclusion of the bisht on UNESCO's list is the culmination of the Ministry of Culture's dedication to promoting and preserving traditional crafts, including bisht-making, which is integral to Qatar's social identity and national symbolism. This effort demonstrates Qatar's commitment to safeguarding this traditional craft, ensuring its cultural relevance, and passing it on to future generations amid evolving economic and social landscapes.

In his address to the session, HE the Minister emphasized the cultural significance of the bisht, describing it as a cross-generational symbol that holds a special place in social life. The bisht, worn by Qatari ancestors during celebrations and educational events, serves as a historical testament to the region's rich heritage. The Minister also highlighted the moment when HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani presented the Qatari bisht to Lionel Messi, captain of the Argentina national team, during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, symbolizing the bisht's esteemed status in Qatari culture.

Minister Al-Thani expressed confidence that the bisht would not be the last cultural heritage element Qatar seeks to inscribe on UNESCO's Representative List. The bisht, a symbol of prestige, social standing, and dignity, has thrived for over 150 years. Its inscription on UNESCO's list is a pivotal step in preserving and promoting Qatari and Arab heritage.

This achievement reflects Qatar's commitment to protecting its cultural heritage and ensuring its transmission to future generations. The successful registration of the Arab bisht as intangible heritage in 2023 demonstrates the Ministry's efforts to achieve global recognition of its cultural and social value.
