Qatar Academy Al Khor Students Engage in Global Debates at Paris Conference

Paris: Fourteen students from Qatar Academy Al Khor (QAK), a part of Qatar Foundation's Pre-University Education, participated in the Change the World Model United Nations (CWMUN) Conference in Paris. They represented Qatar alongside international students, engaging in discussions on pressing global issues.

According to Qatar News Agency, the students from QAK were involved in debates addressing topics such as digital colonialism, education financing, climate change, human rights, and international security. The conference organizers noted that the students displayed thorough preparation, presenting viewpoints, negotiating solutions, and collaborating effectively with peers from other countries.

Throughout the week-long event, the QAK delegation demonstrated notable skills in diplomacy, leadership, creative problem-solving, and communication. Courtney Whiting, a teacher of Individuals and Societies and Director of Model United Nations at Qatar Academy Al Khor, remarked on the significance of the experience. "Participating in the CWMUN Conference reflects QAK's strong commitment to global engagement and provides our students with a valuable opportunity to represent their school and their country on an international stage," she stated.

Whiting elaborated on the preparation process, highlighting the students' extensive experience in local and international conferences. This prior involvement equipped them to navigate the forum confidently. "Our students have participated in many local and international conferences throughout their time at school, which has made them well versed in how such forums operate. As a school, we guide students through the Model United Nations process and ensure they are fully prepared to engage confidently and effectively," she added.

The conference was instrumental in developing a broad range of skills among the students. Whiting noted that it enhanced their communication, diplomacy, collaboration, and critical thinking abilities, while also fostering personal growth in terms of confidence, resilience, and intercultural awareness.

Participation in international conferences aligns with QAK's mission to promote global citizenship. "The conference immerses students in real-world global issues, encouraging empathy, cultural understanding, and responsible decision-making. These elements are central to our vision of global citizenship and to preparing students to engage thoughtfully with the world around them," Whiting explained.

She expressed optimism about the long-term impact of this experience on the students' future roles. "We hope this opportunity inspires our students to take on leadership roles, pursue international opportunities, and apply the skills they gained as they progress through the International Baccalaureate programme and into their future university studies," Whiting said.
