PSP ISSUES STATEMENT EXPRESSING SURPRISE AT CALLS TO “RENDER THOUSANDS OF SYRIAN CHILDREN IN THE STREET”

In an issued statement today, the Progressive Socialist Party expressed surprise and dismay at the “racist campaign against displaced Syrians in Lebanon that continues with more populism, exaggeration, and dangerous incitement,” referring to the recent call to “stop registering any Syrian student who does not have legal residency in schools and institutes.”

“The Progressive Socialist Party is surprised at these irresponsible calls, which directly mean throwing thousands of Syrian children into the street as prey to ignorance and extremist thought, to be an additional explosive factor within Lebanese society, instead of fortifying and protecting them with knowledge until they return to their country,” the statement said.

The Party wondered about the fate of the recommendations that the Parliament Council adopted regarding the displaced persons file and about the official national plan instead of the uncontrolled raging campaigns.

The statement continued to question: “Where is the required and necessary coor
dination with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees? Where is the census of Syrian births in Lebanon? Where is the coordination with the Syrian government in order to advance the issue of return and accelerate it?”

The PSP statement concluded by deeming such investment in incitement as strange, particularly the absence of an official calm, objective and rational remedy approach to this matter.
