A powerful earthquake measuring 6.9 magnitude on the Richter scale struck near the coast of Peru on Friday, prompting a tsunami warning.
According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake reached a depth of 10 km.
The US National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami threat based on the available data.
Authorities have not reported any immediate damage.
Peru is hit by hundreds of detectable earthquakes every year due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast area of intense seismic activity that runs along the west coast of the Americas.
