Pilot Killed, Another Injured in New Mexico Air Base Shooting

Albuquerque: One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting near an air base in the US state of New Mexico. The US authorities said the incident occurred near Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, killing an airman and injuring another.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Air Force stated that the shooting was "an off-base pursuit" after gunfire was heard near one of the entrances to the base. The pilot was shot in the hand and taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment, with the Air Force adding that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Investigations are still ongoing into the causes of the attack, and no information has yet been available about the arrest of suspects. The United States, which has more guns than people, has the highest gun death rate among developed countries. There were 49,000 gun deaths in 2021, up from 45,000 the previous year, and the country has experienced more than 215 mass shootings in 2025, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
