Following the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran by an extremist in the Swedish capital, Stockholm last Wednesday, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) called for collective measures to prevent recurring incidences of desecration of the Holy Quran and offending the Prophet Muhammad.
OIC called, after an emergency meeting held in Jeddah city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for enforcing the international law that clearly prohibits any call to religious hatred.
OIC’s Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha stressed the need to send a clear message that desecrating the Holy Quran and offending the Prophet Muhammad and Islamic figures are not merely normal incidences of Islamophobia, stressing the importance of sending constant reminders to the international community on the urgent enforcement of international law.
He described the desecration of the Holy Quran in the first day of Eid Al-Adha as despicable act, pointing out that the meeting comes to discuss the appropriate response to that act.
At the invitation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is presiding over the current OIC’s session, OIC held an extraordinary open-ended meeting of the Executive Committee to further discuss measures towards the consequences of burning a copy of the Holy Quran in Stockholm.
