Sanya: Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) Husain Al Musallam commended the efforts of HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, President of both the OCA and the Qatar Olympic Committee, whose vision has contributed to strengthening the unity of Asian countries and ensuring the continuity of sports cooperation among all members.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Musallam made these remarks on Thursday during the Sanya 2026 Asian Beach Games. He emphasized that the event represents a significant milestone in the Olympic movement within Asia. Al Musallam highlighted the importance of the role played by the current leadership of the council in unifying efforts and overcoming challenges. He stressed that the insistence on the participation of all member states reflects a true commitment to the spirit of the Asian Olympic Movement.
He mentioned that 2026 will witness several sporting events, with the OCA planning to oversee the Asian Summer Games in Japan and the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Saudi Arabia following the Beach Games in Sanya, China.
Al Musallam noted that Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, in less than four months, has demonstrated his capability to lead the OCA and the Asian Olympic Movement amidst a busy program and significant challenges, particularly in the Middle East and the Gulf, affecting the sports field.
He also highlighted that the OCA meeting saw several countries, including the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Vietnam, India, and Mongolia, submitting requests to host various games, whether they are beach, winter, or Asian Games.
Regarding the potential for a Gulf country to host the Olympic Games, Al Musallam stated that the time has been right for some time, but the decision ultimately depends on the countries themselves. He acknowledged that Gulf countries, especially Qatar, have the necessary capabilities and infrastructure, as well as an international presence and influence, qualifying them to host an event as significant as the Olympic Games.
