NATO Chief Calls for Strong Security Guarantees for Ukraine During Kyiv Visit

Doha: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called for strong security guarantees for Ukraine during his visit to Kyiv, stressing the need to ensure Russia's commitment to any future peace agreement and to prevent further attempts to seize Ukrainian territory.

According to Qatar News Agency, in a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Rutte stated that robust security guarantees will be essential, and this is what he is now working to define.

He emphasized that the United States and Europe would be key partners in providing these guarantees, adding significant weight to any future agreement. Rutte also noted that U.S. President Donald Trump has shown readiness to participate in this effort.

Responding to a question about the difference between the current guarantees and previous ones, such as the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, which Russia did not honor, Rutte explained that the active involvement of Europe and the U.S. would make these guarantees more effective. He stressed that the goal is to make them strong and at a level that deters Russia from attacking Ukraine again.
