Doha: The Muslim World League (MWL) welcomed Australia's announcement of its intention to recognize the Palestinian state, as well as New Zealand's announcement that it is considering recognition.

According to Qatar News Agency, in a statement issued Monday, the MWL's General Secretariat praised this position by the two governments, stressing that it is an important step in the right direction 'toward a legitimate and responsible stance that upholds the historical and legal rights of the Palestinian people and constitutes the only viable path to achieving comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in the region.

The MWL stated that "All nations must assume their responsibility toward addressing the plight of the Palestinian people. This requires standing firmly on the right side of history 'upholding international legitimacy and working collectively to bring an end to this painful humanitarian tragedy and its grave consequences for the region, the global community, and humanity at large."
