Morocco’s UNHRC Presidency: A Remarkable Event, Says Nigerian Academic

Morocco's election to the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for 2024 is a remarkable event, according to Professor of Political Science and Diplomacy at Kaduna State University, Nigeria, Usman Muhammad. "The Kingdom of Morocco has been remarkably elected to the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council, a prestigious position," Muhammad told MAP. Expressing his satisfaction, he emphasized the significance of Morocco securing the presidency with 30 out of 47 member states' support, with South Africa receiving only 17 votes. "Under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, Morocco has established a clear and valuable position in upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights," noted Muhammad. The Kingdom has demonstrated commitment to democratic principles, gender equality, positive action, social and territorial justice, and effective human rights, added the professor. Muhammad also highlighted Morocco's contribution to the Human Rights Council, particularly du ring its foundational development. "It is therefore not surprising to note Morocco's constructive approach and unifying leadership on key issues such as inter-religious dialogue, tolerance and the fight against racial hatred, the right to a healthy and sustainable environment, migrants rights and the impact of new technologies," he added.
