MoECC Monitors Update of National Biodiversity Strategy

Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC), in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), is implementing a project to revise and update the National Biodiversity Strategy within the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, called the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

According to Qatar News Agency, the MoECC held a meeting attended by specialists and consultants both from within and outside the Ministry. This meeting was convened to follow up on the project's implementation, highlighting Qatar's commitment to environmental preservation, sustainability, and biodiversity, as well as supporting national efforts to meet environmental challenges and fulfill international commitments.

The meeting reviewed the project's components and implementation mechanisms, focusing on updating the National Biodiversity Strategy to align with global goals adopted during the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. Discussions were also held on aligning the strategy with Qatar's Third National Development Strategy and detailing steps to implement the action plan according to schedule. Emphasis was placed on the importance of coordination with strategic partners from both public and private sectors to ensure the project's success.

On this occasion, Yousef Ibrahim Al Hamar, Director of Wildlife Development at MoECC, emphasized that the project is a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development within the Qatar National Vision 2030. He highlighted that preserving biological diversity is crucial for environmental protection.

Al Hamar noted that the project is being carried out under the direct supervision of the Ministry in collaboration with UNEP's project officer and is funded by GEF. He pointed out that the National Biodiversity Strategy aligns with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, a global agreement aimed at enhancing ecosystem protection and restoring biological balance, globally adopted during COP15.

Through this project, Qatar aims to align its national strategies with this international framework, further cementing its commitment to environmental protection and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The State of Qatar, through this project, reaffirms its firm commitment to environmental sustainability, based on an ambitious national vision and effective international partnerships to ensure the preservation of its natural resources for future generations.
