Doha: The Ministry of Public Health, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, has launched an initiative to promote food safety within the community, particularly targeting school students.
According to Qatar News Agency, the initiative is designed to enhance students’ understanding of food safety concepts through a comprehensive awareness plan. This plan features a variety of activities tailored to different age groups and educational levels. Included in the initiative are field awareness activities, such as organizing educational inspection visits for students to food factories. These visits aim to reinforce the principles of food safety, demonstrate the role of health inspections in monitoring food establishments, and educate about methods for preventing food contamination. Additionally, students learn about the mechanisms for implementing food safety requirements in a realistic industrial environment.
Four awareness workshops were conducted in primary schools, featuring simplified lectures on the fundamentals of food safety. These workshops emphasized interactive activities for children, allowing them to inspect school canteens and contribute to their understanding of best practices for preventing foodborne illnesses. This approach is designed to instill healthy behaviors from a young age and strengthen students’ roles in maintaining food safety both at school and at home.
Furthermore, the Food Safety Department organized educational visits to the Ministry of Public Health’s food safety laboratories. These visits provided students with the opportunity to learn about food testing procedures, understand major food hazards, and appreciate the importance of laboratory analysis in the early detection of contaminants and ensuring food safety.
The Ministry of Public Health stated that this initiative is part of its strategy to raise health awareness among students and cultivate a generation that is informed and responsible regarding food safety. This is achieved by bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, under the direct supervision of specialists in health control and food safety.
