Doha: Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Deputy Chief for Long-Term Care, Rehabilitation, and Geriatrics, and Medical Director of Rumailah Hospital, Dr. Hanadi Khamis Al Hamad, highlighted the significant strides made by the Qatar Rehabilitation Institute (QRI) since its inception in 2016, emphasizing the importance of its specialized programs and services in enhancing patient care.
According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Hanadi detailed that QRI is the only facility in Qatar offering comprehensive rehabilitation services for both inpatients and outpatients. These services are available during day and evening hours, covering five primary programs: stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, pain management, and pediatric rehabilitation. These programs are designed to address the specific needs of each patient through a multidisciplinary approach.
Dr. Hanadi elaborated on the stroke unit, highlighting its patient-centered care model, which includes a team of specialized rehabilitation physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and skilled nursing staff. She also discussed the institute's focus on brain injury and spinal cord rehabilitation, as well as the innovative hydrotherapy service that utilizes water's therapeutic properties for patient treatment.
The institute has further expanded its services with the new Gait Laboratory, which offers specialized diagnostic and therapeutic rehabilitation services for children and adults. Dr. Hanadi emphasized that this expansion aims to enhance patient care quality and improve life quality through advanced equipment and a multidisciplinary team approach.
Dr. Hanadi also noted the integration of family involvement in the rehabilitation process, ensuring patient needs are met pre-discharge, including home assessments for a safe environment. She highlighted the community-based rehabilitation program, which delivers specialized care to patients at home, focusing on elderly care.
One of QRI's landmark achievements, as mentioned by Dr. Hanadi, is the Precision Rehabilitation Program, which allows patients to track their health progress. This program, the first of its kind in Qatar, offers tailored treatment plans utilizing advanced technologies like robotics for personalized therapeutic interventions.
Moreover, Dr. Hanadi pointed out that QRI also addresses the needs of geriatric and pediatric patients, offering specialized care through various facilities, including the Al Maha Center. The institute collaborates with Qatar University and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar on research to enhance rehabilitation services and accelerate patient recovery.
Dr. Hanadi expressed pride in QRI's international accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), recognizing it as the first under Hamad Medical Corporation to receive such recognition in rehabilitation. She stressed the importance of innovation and continuous development in treatment and rehabilitation.
In discussing challenges, Dr. Hanadi highlighted the crucial role families play in supporting patient recovery, noting the psychological and physical aspects of rehabilitation. She urged the public to focus on prevention by managing risk factors for conditions like strokes.
