Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Japan’s Hokkaido

Hokkaido: A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, according to seismological authorities. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the quake's epicenter was located at a depth of about 80 kilometers.

According to Qatar News Agency, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage following the seismic event. Japan, situated at the convergence of four major tectonic plates, is particularly prone to earthquakes and is home to around 100 active volcanoes.

In a related historical context, Japan experienced a devastating magnitude 9.0 earthquake in 2011. This event triggered a tsunami that resulted in the deaths of more than 15,000 people and caused a significant disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
