Doha: An earthquake measuring magnitude 5.0 on the Richter scale struck on Wednesday in western Chile, causing concern among residents but leaving no immediate reports of casualties or material damage.
According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 131 kilometers west of the city of Lipo in western Chile, at a depth of 10 kilometers. This region is familiar with seismic activity due to its position in the "Ring of Fire", an arc of faults surrounding the Pacific Ocean basin known for frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
Historically, Chile has experienced significant seismic events, including a massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake in 2010 that was followed by a tsunami, resulting in the deaths of 500 people in central and southern parts of the country. The recent quake, while of a lower magnitude, serves as a reminder of the persistent geological risks in the region.
