Luxembourg PM Confirms Intention to Recognize Palestinian State at Upcoming Conference

Luxembourg city: Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa received a phone call today from Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, during which Frieden confirmed his country's intention to announce recognition of the State of Palestine during the upcoming Two-State Solution conference in New York, scheduled for next Monday.

According to Qatar News Agency, during the call, Frieden expressed his regret over the ongoing suffering and Israeli aggression faced by the Palestinian people in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. He also reiterated his country's supportive stance toward Palestine's efforts to achieve peace and establish an independent, sovereign Palestinian state.

For his part, the Palestinian Prime Minister praised Luxembourg's position and its move toward recognizing the State of Palestine. He also appreciated its support for international initiatives and efforts aimed at stopping the aggression against the Palestinian people, as well as backing Palestinian state institutions on all levels.

Last Friday, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor of the New York Declaration, which outlines concrete and time-bound irreversible steps toward a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians, ahead of its meeting scheduled for Sep. 22.

Out of the 193 UN member states, at least 149 countries currently recognize the State of Palestine, which was declared by the Palestinian leadership in exile in 1988.
