Caretaker Minister of Environment, Nasser Yassin, on Friday announced the commencement of a comprehensive workshop aimed at creating Lebanon’s first geological park, or “geopark,” in the Byblos region.
This initiative is set to be formally presented to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for inclusion in the Global Geoparks Network.
Yassin explained that the proposed geopark in Byblos, alongside potential sites in the Chouf and Jezzine regions, marks a pioneering effort in Lebanon’s strategy to increase the number and area of protected regions, enhancing their diversity.
The Ministry of Environment is spearheading this initiative in collaboration with international organizations, Lebanese universities, reserve committees, municipalities, environmental associations, and local communities.
These geological parks are envisioned as geographic areas rich in geological heritage. They will be managed with an integrated approach focusing on the conservation and awareness
of their human and natural legacy. Furthermore, they are intended to stimulate sustainable development, particularly through responsible eco-tourism.
